LibreOffice Now Available in ppa for Ubuntu 10.10 and 10.04

Libreoffice is now available and installed easily for Ubuntu 10.10 and 10.04 by adding the libreoffice ppa.

The following steps allow the addition of the ppa and the installation of LibreOffice:

Warning: This installs from a ppa and not from the official Ubuntu repository, hence there still might be problems with either the software itself, or the installation process. The installation will remove OpenOffice.

Optionally OpenOffice can be removed with the command

sudo apt-get purge "openoffice*"

Apache Software Foundation leaves JCP - Red Hat in alliance with proprietary corporations

As previously reported here the Apache Software Foundation threatened to leave the JCP if Oracle would not allow the ASF to use the TCK toolkit for usage for the open source project Harmony that is licensed under the GPL.

ASF called for the other members to support them in voting against Java 7 and 8 until Oracle would abide by its contractual obligations as stated by the ASF.

LibreOffice: First Goals after Forking

According to golem.de, a German IT news magazine, the Document Foundation has announced its first goals for the office suite LibreOffice. The dependency of Java shall be reduced and a general refactoring of all components is in the plans.

The number of developers has risen to over 90, which is far more than OpenOffice had.

LibreOffice: Request for Contributors and Mentoring

David Nelson is asking graphic artists to help with artwork for the project and the new website.

LibreOffice is also searching for a mascot in the lines of the tux penguin.

Furthermore, LibreOffice is looking for mentors from other open source project that can help to develop the infrastructures needed for LibreOffice.
