Oracle vs. LibreOffice

A couple of weeks ago the members of the OpenOffice Community Council that are employed by Oracle have set an ultimatum to the rest of the members to step down from the council citing conflict of interest by them (All members not employed by Oracle have joined The Document Foundation which is making available LibreOffice, a fork of OpenOffice which allows easier contributions for community contributors).

Adding and Deleting Favorites on the "Search & Launch" Activity Page in Kubuntu Netbook Release (Maverick)

Since updating from lucid to maverick, I was not able to add and delete applications to my favorites on the "search & launch" activity page of the netbook plasma.

In order to perform these functions, the page must be unlocked.

This can be done by clicking on the cashew on the bottom left corner of the page and then clicking on "Unlock Page".

Ubuntu (Maverick) wireless interface not connecting

After a reboot the wireless interface on my laptop did not connect any more. In this case, it was an intel 3945 wireless interface, but this workaround may work with other drivers too.

I noticed that I could not scan the interface anymore with "sudo iwlist wlan0 scanning." It would respond with "device or resource busy".

I therefore removed and inserted the device module in the kernel.

sudo rmmod iwl3945
sudo modprobe iwl3945
